•Chicago Just Before The Fire•
This fascinating map shows the booming city of Chicago just a few years before the Great Chicago Fire would devastate a large portion of the cities downtown. From a tiny village of a mere 100 inhabitants in 1830, Chicago had grown to a massive city of nearly a quarter of a million souls, when this map was printed.
The original hand-painted map, from which this replica was made, was created by one of America's finest mapmakers, Samuel Mitchell, Jr. of Philadelphia. having just taken control of his father's firm, the younger Mitchell was intent on making his mark in the industry with some of the most beautiful maps ever made. By the end of the Civil War, the Mitchell firm of Philadelphia was one of the largest creators of maps in the world. S.A. Mitchell, Jr.'s works are among the most sought after 19th century maps.
